This Time Next Year - Road Maps and Heart Attacks

Expectedly, this band sounds almost exactly like the Movielife. For better or worse, their sound is pretty unwavering, and they lack the memorable hooks of songs like “Jamaica Next” or “Pinky Swear” that their namesake brought us in the past. They shine on “Rhyme & Reason” and “Rise & Fall, Curtain Call”, but their brand of pop-punk leaves quite a bit to be desired. If you like The Movielife, but don’t want a band to do anything more than what they did, this band is for you. (2.5/5)

The Thermals - Now We Can See

An interesting pop-punk/post-punk hybrid from the Portland trio. Having not heard a lot of this band’s material before, I was pleasantly surprised with how they take The Buzzcocks’ angular style and wonderful melodies and translate it to a more pop-centric spectrum. The band excels at the shorter, simpler songs like “We Were Sick” and “You Dissolve”, but the album lacks a little more of a unified feel, and has a tendency to meander. The Thermals have a good sound, they just need to nail it down a bit better. (3/5)

Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures

Alright, I’m going to try to get the Songs for the Deaf comparison out of the way. Yes, it’s very reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age’s masterpiece album, and the reunion of Josh Homme and Dave Grohl will invite the comparison as well. No, it’s not quite as aggressive and nuanced as Songs for the Deaf, and it lacks the loose-cannon aspect that Nick Oliveri brought to the table in Queens, but it’s a better album than Era Vulgaris or pretty much anything the Foo Fighters have done this decade. Josh Homme has one of the best guitar tones in rock music and Grohl pummels the kit throughout the album, but stuff like “Interlude With Ludes” and “Caligulove” could easily be pitched without harming the complete record. Everything seems really on for the first half, particularly the one-two punch of “Elephants” and “Scumbag Blues”, but the B-side loses some steam and starts to feel bloated. Regardless, when the band is one, they’re really fucking on, and there probably isn’t another man in stoner rock who can pull mass appeal out of ideas as dense and obscure as he has. It isn’t perfect - most supergroups aren’t - but it’s still another worthwhile entry into Homme’s resume. (3.5/5)

Failures’ Union - In What Way

Playing like a version of labelmates Cheap Girls more oriented toward rocking out, and replacing the Smoking Popes influence with J. Mascis worship, Buffalo’s Failures’ Union are yet another magnificent Paper & Plastick signing that is helping to turn that label into the new No Idea Records. “Comb” rips like Living-era Dino Jr., and even the lighter songs (“Lake Eerie Nosedive”, “New Walk Home”) that veer more toward Cheap Girls’ sound remain muscular and energetic. One of the best young bands out there. (4/5)

With the exception of 100 Bullets, I fully agree with this list (not necessarily the ranking though).

swap the authority for scott pilgrim, blankets for jeffrey brown, and 100 bullets for something like fortune and glory or new frontier, and you have the exact list of books i suggest to people interested in getting into comics for the first time. great great job time magazine!

The lack of some Ed Brubaker is alarming. Too many superhero style comics on this list too. Criminal or Sleeper should be on this list. The BKV Runaways should be on here. Black Hole by Charles Burns should be on here. Essex County should be here. Finals need to be over so I can put more time and thought into this. Two days and I will.

My beef with 100 Bullets is that while it’s a really cool concept and had a lot of potential as a book, I could never get past Brian Azzarello’s godawful faux-urban dialogue.
